Michigan’s clean bus transition is moving from planning to deployment. At a recent Clean Fleets Work Group meeting, one message was clear: 2026 is the year of implementation.
With strong leadership from the Michigan Department of Education and EGLE, more than $81 million in Clean Bus Energy Grants have already been awarded to support electric and propane buses across the state, with a final funding round underway. School districts are no longer asking whether clean buses work. They’re focused on ensuring they work well.
Electric school bus adoption continues to grow, with 404 electric buses committed statewide, alongside expanded propane options and continued progress on hydrogen fuel cell technologies. The market is healthier, more diverse, and better positioned than it was just a few years ago.
This year, the focus is on:
-
Supporting fleets as they deploy awarded vehicles
-
Sharing practical lessons learned
-
Addressing real-world challenges like infrastructure, operations, and interoperability
Clean buses deliver cleaner air, healthier communities, and long-term savings—and Michigan is proving what’s possible when policy, funding, and industry align.
